We have decided to incorporate scripture memorization as part of our weekly Full Tilt program. Of course this is entirely voluntary, but it is also highly encouraged. There also happens to be a bit of a reward at the end of the year. I will be posting each week’s verse here on the blog in the sidebar. Below are some guidelines for how the scripture memorization component will work.

Guidelines for Scripture Memorization

1) Each week at Full Tilt, we will give you a verse for memorizing on a flash card and will post the verse on our blog as well. Verses will be in the ESV and NIV.

2)Once you memorize a verse, recite it to a leader and they will make a record of it.

3) Verses need to be said word perfect on the first try. Why? This helps makes sure you actually memorized the verse and have not just crammed it into your head right before saying it. We want you to actually memorize these verses so they will stay with you.

4) If you fall behind that is okay. You can say your verses whenever you learn them.

5) There will be a leader in the Planet 56 room before the lesson stars to help you with your verses and listen to them. You can also find a leader after group time and have them listen to you say your verse. Group discussion will not to be for memory verses.

6) Why should you memorize scripture? Because when you memorize a verse it is there for the Holy Spirit to draw to your attention when you need it. The Psalmist said “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Paul calls scripture “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Scripture is part of your spiritual armor, and so you should always have it ready for when you need it. You never know when a challenging situation may come up. Maybe you are facing a temptation, or maybe you have a chance to witness to someone. The more scripture you have memorized the better you will know what God wants you to do and say. Also remember that this is God’s word, and when we take his word to heart we show Him how much we love Him and that we want Him to be at the centre of our lives.

7) While memorizing God’s word is something you should do just because it is important, there is also a reward. When we have our end of the year party everyone who said all their verse will get to go out for dinner, while everyone else stays behind for bologna sandwiches. It will be a nice dinner. Maybe even wings.
